The Benefits of Pets in Assisted Living: Companionship, Joy, and Connection

There’s something special about the welcome you receive from a wagging tail, the comfort of a cat curled up nearby, or the simple pleasure of sharing a story about a beloved pet.

At Kinship Pointe at McCook, an assisted living community in McCook, Nebraska, these moments are part of everyday life. Whether it's a resident's longtime companion, a visiting dog, or a friendly face with four paws greeting guests at the front desk, animals have become a familiar and much-loved part of the community.

And while the furry residents and visitors certainly bring plenty of smiles, their presence represents something even more meaningful: the opportunity for older adults to maintain familiar routines, build relationships, and continue enjoying the things that make life feel like home.

Meet Reggie, Kinship Pointe's Thursday Morning Greeter

Every Thursday, a two-year-old long-haired dachshund named Reggie arrives at Kinship Pointe ready for another day on the job.

Reggie accompanies his owner, administrative assistant Sarah Wallace, to work, where he's become something of a community celebrity. He can often be found greeting visitors at the front desk, following Sarah through the halls as she delivers mail, or enjoying attention from residents and associates.

According to Sarah, Reggie seems to know when Thursday rolls around. He eagerly waits by the door, ready to begin his weekly routine.

His quiet temperament and friendly personality have made him a natural fit at Kinship Pointe. And when he's finished making his rounds, he's perfectly content to settle into Sarah's office chair for a well-earned nap.

Reggie recently earned a feature in the McCook Gazette, but his story is just one example of the many ways animals have become part of the community's daily life.

Pets in Assisted Living Are Part of the Family

For many older adults, pets have been constant companions through years of life's changes. They've been there for family milestones, quiet mornings, afternoon walks, and everything in between.

Moving into assisted living shouldn't automatically mean leaving that relationship behind.

At Kinship Pointe at McCook, residents can continue living with their beloved pets, subject to community guidelines. And it's safe to say there's quite a variety of personalities calling Kinship Pointe home.

Among the community's four-legged residents are Andy, a blue heeler; Ginger, a blind poodle; Charlotte and Walter, two dachshunds; Peaches, a poodle-Pomeranian mix; Bandit, a miniature schnauzer; and a few feline friends.

Bandit has even developed a social calendar of his own, preferring to mingle during the community's twice-weekly happy hours.

There's also Sadie, a black-and-white cat who has been a familiar presence around Kinship Pointe for approximately 15 years. Resident Margie Martin helps care for Sadie, providing food and a warm place to sleep in her garage. During the day, Sadie can often be spotted lounging outdoors or finding a shady place to nap.

These relationships are more than charming stories. They're reminders that residents continue to have routines, responsibilities, interests, and relationships that are uniquely their own.

More Than Companionship: Pets Create Opportunities to Connect

One of the most rewarding aspects of welcoming pets into a senior living community is the natural way they bring people together.

A dog walking down the hallway might inspire a resident to stop for a friendly greeting. Someone visiting a neighbor's pet may find themselves staying for a conversation. Two residents who haven't had much opportunity to connect might discover they share a lifelong love of animals.

Pets are natural conversation starters, creating opportunities for spontaneous interactions that don't require a scheduled activity or special event.

At Kinship Pointe, those interactions happen in the hallways, shared spaces, outdoor areas, and even during happy hour.

The community also welcomes visits from animals outside Kinship Pointe, including a golden retriever from St. Patrick School. These visits offer residents another opportunity to interact with animals, reminisce about pets they've loved, and connect with visitors.

Sometimes, the smallest interactions become the most memorable parts of the day.

The Comfort and Joy of Animal Companionship

For older adults, animals can offer a familiar source of comfort, affection, and purpose.

Caring for a pet provides opportunities to maintain daily routines, whether that means preparing meals, brushing a coat, or simply spending time together. For residents who no longer have pets of their own, visits from friendly animals can offer many of those same moments of enjoyment.

Research also suggests that human-animal interaction can support emotional well-being and social connection, although the benefits vary from person to person.

At Kinship Pointe, the value of these relationships is evident in everyday moments: a resident stopping to pet Reggie, neighbors greeting one another's dogs, or Margie making sure Sadie has a comfortable place to rest.

These small acts of companionship and care contribute to a community where residents feel connected, valued, and at home.

Assisted Living Should Still Feel Like Living

Choosing assisted living often comes with questions about how daily life will change. Will there still be opportunities for independence? Can familiar routines continue? Will it feel like home?

At Kinship Pointe at McCook, the goal is to support residents as they continue living fulfilling lives, surrounded by the people, activities, and experiences that matter to them.

For some residents, that's participating in community events or meeting friends for happy hour. For others, it's enjoying a quiet afternoon with their cat, caring for a longtime canine companion, or stopping by the front desk to visit Reggie.

There isn't one definition of what makes a place feel like home. It's built through relationships, personal choices, familiar comforts, and the freedom to enjoy the little things that make each day meaningful.

And sometimes, it comes with four paws and a wagging tail.
