Omega Introduces Nobi Smart Lighting: Fall Detection Technology

When a loved one moves into assisted living, families want to know they're safe, supported, and able to maintain their independence. One of the most common concerns is the possibility of a fall, particularly when a resident is alone in their apartment or getting up during the night.

At Omega Senior Living, we believe that technology should enhance the care our residents receive without compromising the comfort, privacy, or independence they value.

That's why we're introducing Nobi Smart Lights, an innovative lighting system designed to help prevent falls, detect them when they occur, and alert caregivers so assistance can be provided quickly.

Nobi technology has recently been introduced into the assisted living residences at Kinship Pointe at McCook, marking an exciting step forward in our commitment to resident safety and thoughtful innovation.

Omega Introduces Smart Fall Detection Technology, Nobi

What Is Nobi, and How Does It Work?

At first glance, Nobi looks like an ordinary, modern light fixture. It's simple design blends naturally into a resident's apartment, but inside is sophisticated technology that works quietly to support their safety.

Nobi combines artificial intelligence (AI), optical sensors, and intelligent lighting to recognize movement, detect potential falls, and notify caregivers when assistance may be needed.

Unlike traditional emergency alert systems that require someone to press a button or wear a device, Nobi operates automatically within rooms equipped with the technology.

If a resident falls, the system can recognize the incident within seconds, even in darkness. It can then initiate an alert to designated caregivers, helping reduce the time someone might otherwise spend waiting for assistance.

The technology is designed to be unobtrusive, providing another layer of safety without requiring residents to change their daily routines.

Three Ways Nobi Supports Safer Senior Living

1. Fall Prevention: Helping Reduce Risks Before a Fall Occurs

One of Nobi's greatest advantages is that it does more than detect falls. It also helps prevent them.

Poor lighting and nighttime disorientation can increase the risk of falling, especially when an older adult gets out of bed to use the bathroom.

Nobi's intelligent lighting features help address these everyday challenges:

• Automatic lighting: Lights can turn on when someone enters a room and turn off when they leave.

• Nighttime illumination: Gentle lighting activates when a resident gets out of bed, helping them navigate their surroundings.

• Proactive alerts: Certain movement patterns can alert caregivers when a resident may benefit from assistance.

• Fall analysis: Information about previous falls can help care teams identify risks and develop strategies to reduce future incidents.

Rather than relying exclusively on responding to emergencies, Nobi gives caregivers additional tools to help recognize and address potential risks.

According to Nobi, communities using its technology have experienced an average 55% reduction in falls.

2. Fall Detection: Getting Help When It Matters Most

Even with precautions, falls can still happen. And when they do, the time it takes to receive assistance matters.

Imagine an older adult getting out of bed in the middle of the night and unexpectedly falling. They may be unable to reach a phone, activate a call button, or call out for help.

Nobi is designed to recognize a potential fall automatically, without requiring the resident to take action.

When a possible fall is detected, Nobi can ask the resident whether they have fallen. If the resident confirms the fall or does not respond, the system initiates its notification process.

This technology can help caregivers become aware of an incident sooner, even when a resident is unable to request assistance independently.

Nobi reports an average intervention time of approximately four minutes in communities using its technology. Actual response times depend on the circumstances and the community's response procedures.

3. Smarter Care: Supporting More Personalized Assistance

Beyond fall prevention and detection, Nobi can help care teams better understand residents' everyday activity patterns.

The system offers reporting capabilities that can provide insights into sleep behaviors, movement patterns, and potential changes in daily routines.

For example, a change in nighttime activity might prompt caregivers to evaluate whether additional support would be helpful.

These insights can also assist teams in reviewing fall incidents, identifying environmental risks, and adapting individual care approaches.

Nobi isn't intended to replace personal attention or professional judgment. Instead, it provides another source of information to help caregivers make informed decisions and devote more time to meaningful resident interactions.

What About Privacy? Understanding How Nobi Protects Residents

Privacy is understandably one of the first questions families may have about technology that detects movement inside a resident's apartment.

Nobi is designed to protect resident privacy while providing safety monitoring.

Although Nobi uses optical sensors and image-processing technology, its AI analyzes images directly within the light fixture rather than continuously transmitting identifiable video to an outside server.

If a possible fall is detected, the system supports different privacy settings that determine whether authorized caregivers can view incident images and how much detail is visible.

For example, an incident may be represented by an anonymized stick-figure image rather than an identifiable photograph of the resident.

Residents can also have choices regarding who receives information and how incident images are shared, subject to the community's implementation and applicable consent procedures.

This approach is intended to balance two important priorities: maintaining personal dignity and ensuring caregivers have the information they need to respond appropriately.

Frequently Asked Questions About Nobi Smart Lighting

Does my loved one need to wear a device or push a button?

No. Nobi's fall detection works automatically in equipped rooms. Residents do not need to wear a pendant, remember to charge a device, or activate an emergency button for the system to recognize a possible fall.

Can Nobi detect falls at night?

Yes. Nobi uses infrared technology to detect falls even in complete darkness. Its automatic lighting also helps residents see their surroundings when getting out of bed.

What if someone falls and cannot call for help?

Nobi is designed to recognize the fall and initiate an alert even if the resident is unable to respond. This is especially valuable when someone is unconscious, disoriented, or physically unable to reach a traditional call button.

Does Nobi record everything residents do?

No. Nobi's image-processing system is designed to analyze activity locally without continuously storing identifiable footage of everyday routines. It can collect information about activity patterns, but identifiable incident images are handled according to privacy and consent settings.

Can Nobi prevent every fall?

No technology can eliminate every fall. Nobi is designed to reduce certain risks through intelligent lighting and proactive notifications, while helping caregivers respond promptly when falls do occur. It works alongside individualized care plans, environmental safety measures, and attentive caregiving.

Does Nobi replace caregivers or regular resident checks?

Absolutely not. Nobi is a tool that supports caregivers, not a substitute for them. It provides additional information and alerts that can help associates respond efficiently, while the personal relationships, professional judgment, and compassionate care that define assisted living remain essential.
